The Kern River Valley Historical Society has been in operation for over 40 years. Our mission is to preserve and communicate the rich and colorful history of this region. To achieve these goals we have established the Kern Valley Museum in downtown Kernville next to the Post Office.

During the month of April:  Ceramics by Helen Smoot and Friends

Helen, a local world renowned concert pianist, will be showing her additional talents of being a ceramist.

She is a prolific potter who also gives ceramic classes as well as her music classes.

It is such a totally different discipline than studying, teaching and playing music--working with her hands getting all muddy in clay and never knowing what will result is exciting.

Helen will have some students and friends show their work along with her.

A reception will be held Saturday, April 15th 4 to 6 PM.

This is a once in a life time event.

Do come to meet the artists and talk about their work with them.

I’m looking forward to having another History Days Celebration...
for the Kern River Valley residents and our visitors.

As you know, History Days is a way for us to thank everyone for their support for the last 50 years. It’s been two years since the Museum has put this event on. The board and docents have been very busy. The Annex took a lot of effort.

This year’s History Days will be two days long and it is going to be a good one. We are adding some new events.

Saturday, we will be outside and across the street with all the many favorite displays and demonstrations plus some new ones.  Sunday, we will be at the Museum with lots of art and music to round out a fun two days celebration.

It will all take place from 9 AM to 5 PM, May 20th and 21st. So mark your calendars so you won’t miss out. More information will be in next month’s Saddlebag.

Finally, I want to thank all who have donated, worked-on, spear-headed, ram-rodded, assisted, and came through on that beautiful project, the Annex. Now that it is almost done, let’s have some fun. I’m looking forward to this year’s History Days. See you there.
