The Kern River Valley Historical Society has been in operation for over 40 years. Our mission is to preserve and communicate the rich and colorful history of this region. To achieve these goals we have established the Kern Valley Museum in downtown Kernville next to the Post Office.

During the month of April:  Ceramics by Helen Smoot and Friends
Helen, a local world renowned concert pianist, will be showing her additional talents of being a ceramist.
She is a prolific potter who also gives ceramic classes as well as her music classes.
It is such a totally different discipline than studying, teaching and playing music--working with her hands getting all muddy in clay and never knowing what will result is exciting.
Helen will have some students and friends show their work along with her.
A reception will be held Saturday, April 15th 4 to 6 PM.
This is a once in a life time event.
Do come to meet the artists and talk about their work with them.

Things are hopping at the annex! We haven’t finished moving in...

and we haven’t even begun to organize the collection, but we’ve already had researchers and visitors interested in the collection!

We’ve had two researchers come to find information on water rights in the South Fork. They’ll be back in April or May.

We also had a professor from Bakersfield College, John Kelleher, come to visit. He will be joining our data entry team and wants to offer a Public History class at BC.

The archiving class from East Bakersfield High wants to come up before school is out. If they can get permission for an all-day trip, I’m going to put them to work! That will be great fun!

Our Education Seminars are going full throttle! Thanks to Erie Johnson for all of his hard work! We’ve already had one class, and Erie has classes scheduled through July!

We’re finding that we have a lot of people interested. So be sure to make your reservations early. Space is limited!

Finally, the board is enjoying having its monthly meetings at the Annex. We have plenty of room and it’s nice to meet in our own facility! We’re finally going to begin a big push to move and organize the collection! Our first meeting will be on April 4th at 10:00 a.m.

We have many tasks that need doing. Some require minimal computer skills. Some require no computer skills. I’m hoping that we have plenty of workers and that we can get out of the Walker House soon. The dampness and mold in the building is not good for any of our collection. I think that’s enough for now!
