The Kern River Valley Historical Society has been in operation for over 40 years. Our mission is to preserve and communicate the rich and colorful history of this region. To achieve these goals we have established the Kern Valley Museum in downtown Kernville next to the Post Office.

Movies Under The Stars

This month’s movie will be the third and last Oscar Award movie...

partially filmed here in the Kern River Valley.

It is The Defiant Ones (1958) starring Tony Curtis and Sidney Poitier. It is a story about two prisoners, chained together at the wrist, that escape from a prison in the south.

One great scene is when they cross the Kern River, still chained together, to escape their pursuers. They lose their footing and you’ll have to join us at the pack station to see what happens.

Wednesday, August 9th at 8:20 PM. Popcorn and sodas as usual. It’s not a movie without popcorn and a soda.
