The Kern River Valley Historical Society has been in operation for over 40 years. Our mission is to preserve and communicate the rich and colorful history of this region. To achieve these goals we have established the Kern Valley Museum in downtown Kernville next to the Post Office.

The Curator’s Corner

We are moving right along at both the museum and the annex...

One big job that was recently accomplished is cleaning out the curator’s closet. And boy, did we find some treasures! Several old maps were found. Some blueprints to the Big Blue Mine were in one box. There were many great old pictures as well.

All of these items and many more will be stored at the annex, organized, and be available to the public. In the meantime, the closet will be used to store old Historical Society records, gift shop books, and maintenance items.

At the annex, our volunteers have processed almost 4,000 books! They all have Dewey Decimal numbers and are on the shelves. We have inventoried almost 400 works of art.

We are also organizing a plethora of booklets, pamphlets, magazines, articles, and such. Many maps are also being organized and stored. Soon, we will begin organizing and scanning old photographs.

The entire purpose of this endeavor is to make all of these items accessible to researchers and the public. We have some real treasures in our annex and we want to make sure people know about them!

If you have items that have historical significance to our Valley and you’d like them preserved and shared, please contact me. I will be glad to accept donations!
