The Kern River Valley Historical Society has been in operation for over 40 years. Our mission is to preserve and communicate the rich and colorful history of this region. To achieve these goals we have established the Kern Valley Museum in downtown Kernville next to the Post Office.

October Recaps:

I hate bunching up the recaps to these outstanding events...

but I ran out of space. These events deserve better, but here we go:

We had a great general meeting program presented by Deputy Ranger Phillip Desenze. He spoke to us about the two new Forest Service buildings in the Valley. He also showed pictures of old Forest Service buildings over the last 100 years.

Our field trip to the Rankin Ranch was wonderful. As usual, the Rankin Family was gracious and informative. We learned a lot about the ways the ranch has diversified over the years. We also got to go to the Rankin Cemetery and learn more history.

Finally, we had a very informative class on writing for publication taught by Kathleen Creighton-Fuchs. In her usual engaging way, she explained about writing to your audience, focusing on the task, having an agent, self-publishing, and digital publishing.

All in all, we had a very productive month.
