The Kern River Valley Historical Society has been in operation for over 40 years. Our mission is to preserve and communicate the rich and colorful history of this region. To achieve these goals we have established the Kern Valley Museum in downtown Kernville next to the Post Office.

Mayflower Miner's Cabin
The first white settlers to the Kern River Valley were the gold miners in about 1853.  The rip-roaring mining towns that sprung up were as colorful and exciting as you can imagine.  You'll find stories and exhibits about gold mining and walk through the Mayflower miner's cabin.

This cabin is 150 years old and was once located in the Greenhorn Mountains.  It was given to the Historical Society by the Forestry Service and was torn down in 1993, stored, and rebuilt in 1998. It had to conform to current earthquake standards, consequently, it is among the most earthquake proof structures in Kernville.
