The Kern River Valley Historical Society is celebrating over 50 years of operation! Our mission is to preserve and communicate the rich and colorful history of this region. The Kern Valley Museum in downtown Kernville, next to the Post Office, welcomes visitors to explore our rich history.

Paleontology in Kern County (1850-2017) Saturday, March 10, at 10:30 a.m....

at the Annex will be very interesting. John P. Stegall is a researcher and former curator of the Buena Vista Museum of Natural History and Science in Bakersfield, Calif. Kern County, California, is an important science resource in a variety of fields, especially vertebrate paleontology (study of fossil vertebrate animals.) (study of fossil vertebrate animals.)

The county’s rich geological and paleontological history goes back to the Age of Dinosaurs, and this area had a great diversity of species of whales, giant sharks, flightless sea birds and Ice Age mammals that died in our local tar pits.
