The Kern River Valley Historical Society is celebrating over 50 years of operation! Our mission is to preserve and communicate the rich and colorful history of this region. The Kern Valley Museum in downtown Kernville, next to the Post Office, welcomes visitors to explore our rich history.

What's Happening

If you missed either the class or field trip for March, everyone enjoyed both. The Star Party was great with good weather, and we had lots of people attending.

Thank you to Rich Burdge and the Astronomy Club for bringing their telescopes and showing us the beautiful night sky and the Airport Cafe for coffee and cookies for everyone. We had a little interruption with a helicopter picking up a patient. Everyone enjoyed themselves.

The class about “Paleontology in Kern County” was well attended. Thank you to Jayne Hotchkiss-Price and Al Price for picking up John Stegall in Bakersfield and returning him to Bakersfield. John did a wonderful job of showing us what life was like during the time of the Temblor Sea, which is the valley now. He talked about all the animals and what the land was like.

Can you believe that Santa Cruz today was directly west from where Bakersfield is today and that the desert was grasslands and trees? It was exciting information.
