The Kern River Valley Historical Society is celebrating over 50 years of operation! Our mission is to preserve and communicate the rich and colorful history of this region. The Kern Valley Museum in downtown Kernville, next to the Post Office, welcomes visitors to explore our rich history.

What's Happening

The center of our historical society, as you know, is our museum. The heart of our museum is our docents. As a group, they do a most important task - they docent. And they do a splendid job of it. To our visitors, they are who we are.

This important job of docenting may seem too large, to some, but, really, it is not. It is a most enjoyable, rewarding task. I have never known anyone who has quit as a docent because they wanted to. But attrition does have a way of raising its ugly head. Through no fault of their own, docents have had to retire due to reasons like death in the family, had to move away, aging, health issues, and so on. As a result, our numbers are down.

To make up for this decrease, many of our docents are working multiple shifts. I am asking for your help. If you are not a docent, please volunteer. If you are a docent, please talk to someone you know who might want to become one. Let’s work together to get our docent numbers up to where they should be.

Please help if you can,
